Larry Bird was born on December 7, 1956 in Indiana. His mother’s name was Georgia and his father’s name was Joe. As a child he grew up in West Baden and French Lick, a near by town, which brought him his now famous nickname: “The Hick from French Lick.”. Financial problems were a constant struggle for his family during Larry’s childhood years. It was made worse by his father’s personal difficulties and alcoholism. In 1975, his parents decided to get a divorce and later his father committed suicide.

According to Larry, growing up poor motivated and encouraged him to do his best in whatever he does. Bird’s passion for basketball was indeed overflowing and beyond measure. He would be in the gymnasium early in the morning, before classes and after classes, until late in the evening to practice.

In the 1978 NBA Draft, the Boston Celtics selected Larry Bird, despite the fact that they were not sure whether he would enter the NBA or stay at Indiana State to finish his last season. He decided to finish the season but the Celtics retained the exclusive rights to Bird until the 1979 NBA Draft. Before the deadline, he signed a $650,000 year contract with the Celtics; making him, at the time, the highest paid rookie in the history of the NBA.

Bird concluded his basketball career with an average of more that 24 points, 6 assist per game, and 10 rebounds while shooting 49.7% from the floor, 88.6% from the foul line and 37.6% from three-point range. He later became the head coach of the Indiana Pacers despite having no previous coaching experience.

I’ve recently become something of an avid basketball autograph collector so I’ve started this site, and its corresponding blog, as a means of detailing my growing collection and giving hints to others who share my interest.

My main focus, as a collector, has been on autographs from players who are or were members of the Cleveland Cavaliers. My love for the Cavs goes all the way back to the Mark Price and Brad Daugherty days of the late 80’s and early 90’s. Of course, now that LeBron James is on the scene my interest in the Cavs is at an all-time high. You can see a photo to the right of some basketball cards I recently added to my collection.
